ASH Ireland welcomes the announcement by the HPRA that nicotine replacement therapy products will be now become available on general sale, as opposed to being available only in pharmacies. This wider availability of nicotine replacement therapy should be of assistance to smokers who wish to quit, both in respect to greater availability and reduced cost, which hopefully will now emerge.
The availability of nicotine replacement therapy is widely accepted as one of the factors which assist smokers in quitting. ASH Ireland raised the possibility of nicotine replacement therapy being made available on general sale with the Irish Medicines Board which preceeded the Health Products Regulatory Authority, the providers concerned and IPHA in 2013. We are very pleased that a decision has now been taken, which will assist consumers who are considering or involved in the decision to quit smoking.
