Smoke Free Playgrounds

County/City Councils that have adopted smoke-free playgrounds initiative
Carlow Carlow County Council Decision taken in November 2012 to erect “No Smoking Signs” in all playgrounds under the Council’s control.
Cavan Cavan County Council It is hoped that the Bye Laws adopted by Cavan County Council in October 2012 will be rolled out throughout the county in the near future.
Clare Clare County Council All playgrounds are smokefree and signs have been erected.
Cork Cork County Council Bye-laws prohibiting smoking in playgrounds were adopted on 1st May 2014.  It is planned to erect smoke-free signs in 2015.
 Donegal Donegal County Council First in Ireland to take the initiative in 2010.  All playgrounds in the council’s area are smoke-free and signs have been erected.
 Dublin Dublin City Council The Council announced in May 2012 that “No Smoking” signage was to be erected in all playgrounds in public parks. 
  Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Decision taken in November 2013 to implement this initiative.   
Fingal County Council Millennium Park in Blanchardstown first playground in Fingal to go smoke-free in 2011.  All playgrounds in this area are now smoke-free and signs have been erected.
South Dublin County Council All playgrounds are smoke-free.  Currently all signage is being renewed and as part of this, the “no smoking” signage will be included, particularly where it is absent or removed.
Galway Galway City Council As part of the Galway Health Cities Project, Galway City Council announced its intention to erect no smoking signs in its playgrounds in September 2012. 
Galway County Council Decision taken in 2013 to implement this policy.  Signs have been erected in 10 of the Council owned playgrounds.
Kerry Kerry County Council Council agreed in November 2012 to adopt the initiative.
Kildare Kildare County Council Playgrounds constructed by the Council incorporate no smoking signage at the entrance.
Kilkenny Kilkenny County Council Decision taken on 21st July 2014 to implement this policy. 
Laois Laois County Council Erected signage in 50% of playgrounds.  The remainder to be rolled out in 2015.  Policy is currently being updated for playgrounds to include smoke-free policy.
Leitrim Leitrim County Council Council passed a Motion on 13th September 2012 to ban smoking in all its playgrounds around the county.  New signage to be erected later in 2014 which will contain a no smoking statement.
Limerick Limerick City and County Council Bye-laws were adopted in 2012 banning smoking in playgrounds in Limerick County. Currently no bye-laws are in place for Limerick City, however a number of playgrounds have no smoking signs.
Longford Longford County Council Council agreed in October 2012 that a smoke-free policy in all playgrounds would be adopted.
Meath Meath County Council Bye-laws adopted in July 2014 to implement no smoking policy in playgrounds.  Signage is to be erected in respect of these bye laws.
Monaghan Monaghan County Council Resolution passed on 7th November 2011, that the Council erect No Smoking signs in all playgrounds in the county.
Offaly Offaly County Council Council has adopted to support the initiative and it is hoped that signage will be erected in playgrounds in 2014.
Tipperary Tipperary County Council No-smoking signs have been erected.

 

Waterford Waterford City and County Council Bye-laws introduced in 2015 include a ban on smoking in all children’s playgrounds owned by the Council – this also includes e-cigarettes.
Westmeath Westmeath County Council All public playgrounds in Westmeath have no smoking signs in their playgrounds.
Wexford Wexford County Council Announcement by Wexford County Council on 18th September 2012 that the Council had passed a Motion to adopt a no smoking policy in its children’s playgrounds.
 Wicklow Wicklow County Council At their Strategic Policy Committee meeting in March 2013 the committee recommended that a smoke-free policy be introduced in all playgrounds in Wicklow county.
