ASH Ireland supports HSE’s announcement today, to ban the use of electronic cigarettes on all HSE campuses – effective from 1st May 2014. The market for electronic cigarettes has expanded greatly in recent years; mainly because of major a marketing drive and the more recent investment by the Tobacco Industry.
Initially many people in the health sector felt there could be some potential in electronic cigarettes being used as a cessation tool; however there is no evidence to support that this is actually happening, which is very disappointing.
Until there is clear evidence available to support the use of electronic cigarettes as an asset in cessation, then there is no justification for this product being used in any health sector environment.
ASH Ireland would welcome more definitive research on electronic cigarettes and we would certainly welcome regulation of this product in regard to manufacture, content, sale and marketing.
